Starting Out in Backgammon

Backgammon is the ultimate race game and has been enjoyed around the world for over five thousand years. Although the play is highly skilful, the fact that the moves rely on the fall of the dice introduces a large element of luck. In the long run the better player will always win, but the beauty of the game is that even a novice can win the odd game against a world champion.

In this user-friendly introduction to the game, ex-British champion Paul Lamford provides newcomers to the game with a thorough grounding in the essentials of play.

Backgammon Games and Strategies

Backgammon is experiencing a revival, rapidly becoming one of the most popular table games in the worldnternet included. But it's not just a game; it is an obsession. In some countries of southern Europe and the Middle East, it is a way of life. A typical game of backgammon lasts 6-8 minutes if it is it?or Gioul, and double that if it is Plakoto or Moultezim. These are the fastest, most absorbing minutes in a player lifetime. The game moves in lightning speed and requires total concentration. The mixture of chance and skill are perfectly balanced in itthe other games leaning heavier on skill. There is hardly a moment of boredom when you play Backgammon. Even when the game seems hopelessly lost, there is still a finite probability of a turnaround. The suspense is always there, the tension is never ending. What more would you want for an evening ofelaxation? This book is written to fill a voidhe almost total absence of information on backgammon games, other than basic itusually called backgammon in the West. The authors find it incredible that Gioul, Plakoto and Moultezim still remain a well-kept secret among backgammon connoisseurs. Gioul is the most fun-filled game played on the boardvery dice throw a surprise. Plakoto is without doubt the king of Backgammon games. Moultezim is a serious game for the purist, the consummate space strategist. Players who are unaware of these games are not really fulfilled. This book, illustrated with more than 300 diagrams, illustrations and exercises, aims to change all that, and turn all casual players into full-fledged backgammon experts.Dr. N. S. Tzannes, a Professor of Electrical Engineering, has authored several books and many scientific papers in his field of Communications. Dr. B.

Backgammon

Backgammon is the story of two lifelong friends and their path to forgiveness. It is an engaging, wickedly beautiful journey through the great successes and devastating accidents of life through the eyes of one who has seen it all, but is still looking - looking to reclaim a piece of something precious that was lost to him years ago while in the hands of his best friend. Backgammon was the tortoise's life. It was not just the simple game itself that enamored him, but his opponents and the insights he gained from playing with them. Success, much like life, hinges on the luck of the roll. Once the basics have been mastered, the moves one makes cannot be undone and they change the entire course of the game.

Buzan's Book of Mental World Records

The motto of the Olympic Games is citius, altius, fortius: faster, higher, stronger. And yet there are physical limits to what the athletic human body can achieve.

Not so with the mind. The abilities of the human mind know no limit, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the sphere of mental world records. In 1991 at the first World Championship for Memory Skills, the newly-crowned World Champion Dominic O’Brien accurately memorised a shuffled pack of cards in just five minutes. At the time, professional psychologists confidently announced that this was a barrier that could never be broken. However, within a decade the top memorisers, including Dominic himself, achieved results that made this pace appear snail-like. The record for a shuffled pack of cards is now less than forty seconds.

Backgammon to Win

Backgammon is set to be the new poker. Like that perennial favourite, it's a game of skill that can engross its players. Unlike poker, it doesn't rely so much on chance, meaning that backgammon can be more satisfying to play and more fun for the beginner - who doesn't end up folding eight times out of ten. It's an action-packed, head-to-head game, but can also be played in tournaments, which is why it's gaining increasing popularity on online gambling sites. "Backgammon to Win: Play Like A Pro Both Online And Off" introduces beginners and those who haven't played for years to the strategies and tips needed to play the game well, whether you want to make serious money in tournaments or play just for fun at a board with friends. With clear, precise text and illustrations providing step-by-step directions, "Backgammon to Win" has everything you need to be one step ahead of the game.

Winning Backgammon

Backgammon is one of the most misunderstood and underrated games, often being labeled as a game of chance in which the winner is determined by the luck of the dice. In actuality, backgammon, when properly played, is a challenging game involving a great deal of skill. Learn the secrets of winning consistently, in this illustrated manual. An explanation of the rules and mechanics of the game, including the often ignored use of the doubling cube, is followed by instruction in various strategies. First, master basic strategy, including blocking, caterpillaring, and mental aspects of the game. Next, see how the correct doubling strategy can make or break a player's success. The use of the roll-over-the once-per-game option of either rolling again or forcing your opponent to roll again--is also fully explained, followed by the recommended opening and early-game moves and strategies for the mid-game, the end-game, and bearing-off. The problematic back-game is detailed, as is the correct set, match, and tournament strategy. Backgammon variants, including chouette, acey-deucy, and the beaver, are also explained. With a history going back more than 5,000 years, backgammon is the oldest game in civilization. With the strategies included here, anyone can become a future master of this ancient pastime. Backgammon tactics,

This is a basic beginner's book on Backgammon. In spite of the claims made on the cover here of being the last word on the subject, this is actually the first word. The author gives 50 problems and their solutions. There are explanations of the reasons why the solutions are correct. This book is a good two to three hour read. I wish I had this book when I was learning backgammon. It would have saved me a lot of time. Do not expect to find any advanced computer analysis here. Ishi Press has brought back this long been out of print book because most of the current books are so advanced that they will discourage anybody thinking of taking up the game. We have checked the solutions to the 50 problems in this book and they are all still correct. I would recommend this book as suitable for a gift to a friend who wants to learn how to play. The friend will be lured into thinking that Backgammon is an easy game. Many players make their living at backgammon. Only a few of the strongest chess players in the United States are able to make their living playing chess. However, there are hundreds and perhaps thousands of backgammon players who are able to earn a good living at this game. In reality, backgammon is one of the few games that has defied computer analysis. Nowadays there are a dozen chess playing programs that can easily defeat the World Champion at chess. However, no program has solved backgammon.

If you score 200-224, you are not an expert yet, but you are rapidly approaching this point. A score of 135-199 indicates that you are a good, sound player, probably the best in yourneighborhood. If you score less than 135 points, there is no need for despair. Study this book carefully. It can serve as a case studies tool for improving your game. Besides, the problems presented are not only mind-taxing, they are also entertaining. And the justifications for the optimum play are clearly explained, often culminating in various useful rules of thumb (the closer-closest rule, the rule of even, etc.) for difficult, but commonly occurring situations.
